The Underground History of American Education

The Underground History of American Education - book The Underground History of American Education: A School Teacher’s Intimate Investigation Into the Problem of Modern Schooling by John Taylor Gatto

This book is absolutely outstanding! I was hooked from the first page. It is an engaging ride as comfortable as a campfire story. He reveals the American education system with gentle precision. One can easily separate his conclusions from facts and feel empowered to review the primary sources rather than feel accosted by their presentation. John Gatto’s credentials as a master educator are demonstrated on every page.

Mr. Gatto’s conclusions are in sharp contrast to what many have been programmed to believe so expect some cognitive dissonance, depending on your level of public school indoctrination. Personally I find Gatto to be a kindred spirit. I have independently encountered many of the sources he discusses and arrived at the same conclusions, though not from an education system perspective.

The book can be freely read online here, though even if you choose that route I expect you may want to purchase a copy in print or audio form. (I hope you do to help support John Gatto, and this site.)

In any case, read the book, talk about it, and discuss it here. :-)

Present Momement Awareness

Present Moment Awareness: A Simple, Step-by-Step Guide to Living in the Now [Paperback] Shannon Duncan (Author)

This is a great book if you want more than a simple explanation of Present Moment Awareness or mindfulness. It offers a friendly way to both learn and experience concepts that are difficult to describe and that can otherwise seem foreign. The author, Shannon Duncan, breaks the process of learning Present Moment Awareness into four phases and does the same with the book. One may take the book at whatever pace is comfortable and then keep it as a reference or companion in the journey to mindfulness.
